We need science so we can make sense of the world around us. Its part of what makes us human, that drives us to explore – new and unexplored lands n the past, new and poorly understood human physiology and disease.

But its not the only thing we need, art and music are all important parts of being human so they all have a place in society and mixed together it can make for some very interesting times.

Science is needed to help us understand the world. It lets us try things out. It lets us make predictions. It helps us find answers.

Young children need to try things for themselves. They also watch and listen. As they grow, they play with things and thus gain an understanding of the world they live in.

Scientists do the same thing, but at a much larger level. They too experiment and observe, but more formally. They are learning not just for themselves, but for the entire of humanity. They are not individuals, but part of a huge group of people doing the same thing. Team-learning at a grand scale!

We need science to help us understand the world we live in and to help us develop the world we live in. This might sound strange to you but I can remember a time when we watched videos instead of DVDs, when you didn’t have a mobile phone, when most people didn’t have access to the internet… These are all technological advances that have happened in my lifetime – just imagine what will happen in yours!

Science has an impact on everything. It’s not just about curing diseases, engineering crops to grow in harsh conditions, purifying water for the people that need it. It’s the every day things too: detergents for washing clothes, flu remedies, make up, preservatives for foods. I can hardly write a list, there’s just so many things!

Some good answers here already, so I will turn the question back to you: do you think we need science? Why?
