They shouldn’t! And I know plenty of people who are definitely not rich who have had children by IVF.
However, the NHS will only fund a certain numer of IVF trials per couple. If it doesn’t work in those attempts, then the couple must pay for additional rounds themselves.
Everyone should have access to a certain amount of IVF treatment on the NHS; however, if you are able to pay for (very expensive) private medical care, then I suppose it is up to you how you decide to spend your money.
This is the problem with private medical care, but I think we have a better system in the UK than in the US for example.
They shouldn’t!! But the problem in this country is that IVF on the NHS is a kind of postcode lottery because it depends where you live how many trials they will let you have. 🙁
There is no reason why they should. However, free medical treatment (via the NHS) is something that needs to be decided by society. Should we offer only emergency treatment for accidents? Should we provide long-term care? Should we Should we offer IVF? Should we offer cosmetic surgery?
All these things cost money and deciding where the limit is, is a very difficult thing to do. And, if it is not paid for by the tax-payer, then what ends up happening is that rich people are able to afford special treatment that others cannot.
Its available on the NHS, but there is a limited amount of money to go round. Someone has to decide whether a cancer patient has treatment or a couple can have an attempt at a child.
