      To protect our heads.

Our head is fragile. The brain is a very important part of us, that is easily damaged. It is important to protect it.

Additionally, there is a lot of blood sent to the head (to keep the brain working). If we get a cut on the head, we tend to bleed there are LOT more than in other parts of the body (such as the fingers). Also, it can be more difficult to stop the bleeding on the head.

And, the head is exposed. It is easier to bump your head than, say, the inside of your elbow. We wear safety equipment on the parts of the body that are most likely to get knocked the most (feet, hands, head).

Building sites can be dangerous places. Especially when there is machinery or anything operating overhead.

I wear a hard hat, gloves, boots and overalls when working on science construction sites. Sometimes I wear safety glasses and ear-plugs too.

Health and safety! It’s generally not good if you get hit on the head…

(though as Sarah said, it could definitely be a fashion statement…Derek wears one all of the time!)
