I guess I became a scientist 2 years ago when I started doing my PhD. Before then I was at Uni studying Chemistry, but now I still work at the Uni but I’m doing research instead. I work in the lab every day. It’s really cool, I love it!

I guess when I qualified from Uni and went into a scientific job which is nearly 20 years ago (how time flies)

In some ways everyone is a little bit of a scientist. Have you ever wondered why? Or asked a question? Or trying something out (= experimenting)?

But I guess I started in a more serious way, when I started doing amateur astronomy. I kept a record of my observations and wrote down what I saw. I started sending my observations to an observatory, and they used the results for their work. I was probably about 14-15 at the time.

More formally, I qualified as a scientist when I completed by university degree in the early 90’s.

Not really sure. D o you become I scientist when you first become interested in science? Or when you have your first science-related job? And do you ever really ‘become’ a scientist or is it a continual process of learning how to be one?

I suspect though you just wanted to know when my first lab job was: 1993, did a summer program in secondary school, but I haven’t worked continuously in labs since then.
