I never had any other jobs (oher than working in a pasta factory during University vacations and I hated it so much I worked hard enough to mean that I never had to go back there!)
Oh I did a lot of childcare as a teenager -it was the only job my parents let me have.
I have taught school and done a lot of private tutoring.
And I worked one summer in uni in a bakery. That was the best job EVER.
Other than that, it’s mainly been research.
I have had a lot of part time job along my studies! I started working when I was 14! Here is a list of all the jobs I have ever had:
Waitress in a Golf Club
Assistant in a chinese take-away
Shop Assistant in Happit (old lady clothes shop)
Shop Assistant in Argos
Waitress/cleaner in a 4* B&B
Leafleter
Cleaner for a private landlord
Shop Assistant in Sainsburys
And I also got paid to do some Psycology experiments once!
Most of my work has been computing/technology-related, but before I went to university I worked in a bakery (my first job when I was 15!) and I also worked at a sports centre in Oxford, coaching and as a duty manager.
Before I finished school and university, I used to work in industrial construction. My summer and weekend jobs would be as a welder or scaffolder or labourer. It was hard work, but I learned a bit and I guess it has helped me with building telescopes.
Once I got to university, I started getting summer jobs in astronomy as well. Then, when I left university I stopped doing part time construction work altogether and concentrated on my main job in science.
Curiously, these days I’m doing construction work again… but this time is not factories and complexes, but telescopes.
