Science is global, you can just about do it anywhere, from the arctic (like Derek) to a lab in the states, to a submarine at the bottom of the deepest oceans.

There is a reason why many of us will travel overseas to find work before coming home to the UK. The UK university system is one of the best places in the world for undergrad and postgrad degrees. But we don’t have as many places once you qualify as other places in the world. The UK has all the people and not so much money whereas the US ahs all the mmney and not enough people. So for my knid of science, lots of postdocs (after the PhD) spend sometime overseas, North America, Europe Australia etc. this is great experience for both science and life. Eventually peple come back but we tend to go where the opportunities are. Just think you could be living in New York or Sydney, or in the middle of the ocean doing science.
