The frustration of having experiments that often don’t work. This is something that all new scientists need to deal with emotionally because a lot of times eperiments don’t work for reasons you can’t figure out yet or because you haven’t learned ho to do them poperly yet. Older scientists like me have already buil up our emotional resources so it’s easier when experiment don’t work but still frustrating. And that sort of emotional response serves you well for other aspectsof life [like when you get on the bsolutely LNGEST line at the supermarket or you get dumped or whatever.]
Always remember though, just because you study sciene does not mean o have to ork in a lab. There are sooooooooooooooooooooooooo many things you can o witha science degree.

My least favourite thing about science is all the misconceptions that people have about it. Like you must wear a white coat to be a scientist, and have a big grey beard and generally be a bit mental. Or people assume that you must be a total geek and into online gaming and have no social skills. And the worst one is “ooh you must be really brainy to do science” cos that’s not true, you just need to work hard. Sometimes people don’t trust science too and that makes me kind of sad.

When I meet new people, they are often surprised when I tell them I am doing a PhD in Chemistry. And I think that’s a lot to do with the media. I just don’t look like a proper scientist! I wear leggings and motorcycle boots! If you ever see a scientist in the news, they always have their white coat on!

I was recently asked if we would do a photoshoot for Cancer Research UK cos me and the girls in my research group doing the Race For Life on the 19th of June. There were 2 photographers from the local newspapers. We turned up in our running gear and a race for life t-shirt, but when we got there, they wanted me to go and get our lab coats so people would think we were “real scientists”! Pfft!!

The difficulty in getting enough money to do the research I want to is not great and also the competition between some scientists when they would get much further if they collaborated more.

The least favourite thing for me is the administration work. Filling out my claim forms, applications, staff registers and time-sheets can be really boring. I know that its important, and it needs to be done to keep projects going and to get new ones started. But it can be tedious when you’d rather be doing an experiment, or designing or building something instead.

Definitely the same as Tim: not having enough money/resources/time to do the things that I want to do!
