The ability to record and playback sound. I love music and always seem to be listening to something, so without the recording devices, it would be a quieter world, but not so much fun for me.
I think the internet. I don’t know about anybody else but I would be truly lost without it. I use the internet every day for reading the news, checking the weather and tide times, checking bus and train times, booking holidays, buying insurance, communicating, time wasting, accessing scientific journals, uploading photos, finding places on a map… I really would be lost without it!
I think “pen-and-paper” would be my choice. The ability to be able to write something down, either to communicate, explain or remember is wonderful. Although I agree with Sarah that the Internet is awesome, there is something elegant about being able to put numbers, letters, symbols, diagrams and sketches onto paper by hand. Maybe hand-held computers will one day do that, but I think there’s a long way to go before they match pen-and-paper.
(And, have you ever tried folding a computer to make a hat or a dart?)
I agree with Sarah, I think it has to be the Internet — it has changed the way that we share and access information. I definitely feel lost when I can’t access the Internet, as it is my primary source for news and entertainment, as well as being vital for my work.
Also, think about how it has changed the way we speak to each other, especially using social networking tools such as Facebook and Twitter.

Obviously sliced bread, but it’s ashame that we’re not aloud to choose it as our favourite invention on this website. 🙁

Just read your profile to find out what you did choose as your favourite. Yep… I agree with you. Sonic screwdrivers are _definitely_ cool.
