The thing I am most scared of is driving a car. I was in a pretty serious car accident a few years ago and my car was wrecked so I didn’t drive for a while. Then when I tried to get behind the wheel again, I found that I just couldn’t. My stomach felt like it was filled with lead and my heart started thumping and before I knew it I was in floods of tears. This would happen even if I just sat in the driver’s seat and the car wasn’t even running.
Over a really long period of time, I have overcome my fear and I can drive a car if it’s necessary, but I try to avoid it at all costs because it generally makes me incredibly stressed and usually I cry afterwards!
I guess the moral of this story is never avoid things that you are afraid of, because it will just grow into a bigger and bigger phobia 🙁
There are things that make me nervous (cities) and things that might make be jump (an unexpected noise or insect), however deep fear is not something I don’t often experience.
I guess the thing that causes the biggest reaction, in terms of physically feeling something, is extreme heights. Recently I was near the edge of a big cliff (100+ metres). That made my stomach cramp up!
I agree with Tim, deep water can feel menacing (even thought I have done a night scuba dive in Thailand, which was amazing!). Maybe heights (or more accurately, falling from heights!).
