• Question: what do we meanby shingle beach

      Shingles, in this sense, are small rocks (usually smoothed by the pounding of the sea). The are typically an inch or two in size. Sometimes they form a layer on the beach, making it look like the beach is made just of these “shingle” rocks. However, often if you dig down, you can find there is sand or mud underneath.

      It is because of these shingles that we call it a shingle beach.
