What are you calling the world? Planet Earth or the universe?

Ah… that little dinky species. What was the latin name? Dinkiobium? 🙂

Silliness aside, that’s pretty much it. Simple chemicals formed self-replicating ones, which then led to the first complex cell. One of them must has been the first one, and sure enough that would constitute a species.

(which I still think it should be called a dinkiobium!) 😉

I think it also took a long time from the earth cooling to the first organic life, but the building blocks and self replicating molecules came first. There may have been many attempts to start life with new organisms runnig out of fuel or not having the right chemicals, until one organism found a nice nich to hide in and multiply.

It would be fascinating to explore other worlds like Mars or Titan where life may have started but not got as far as it has on earth. If the same kind of conditions are out there in the universe, then thre may be plentt of other single living microbes. All they have to do is survive the occasional catastophy then we might see something a bit like us (or something really quite different!)
