If the tumour has broken up into small groups of cells and is in the blood system, then not very long as in minutes. The problems start when the cancer in the blood attaches to blood vessels further down the body from where it started. These secondary or metastatic cancers are hard to treat so we are trying to stop it happening in the first place.
