      Great question!

It all depends on why you want to set up a static IP address and also whether your Internet provider will allow you to do this! When you have a static IP address, it means your machine can be “addressed” or accessed from anywhere else at that specific location e.g. 138.38.20.5. When you have a dynamically assigned IP address (such as with home broadband), it means whenever you connect you get a randomly assigned address, usually in a set range. For example, my IP address now is 10.61.32.144, but this is an internal IP address for my hotel’s Wi Fi network!

What operating system are you using? It would be set up differently under Windows, Mac or Linux…

Usually you have to pay more for a static IP address, more so now because they are running out in the current IPv4 system!
