Some coughs are caused by to much of a chemical in the body called bradykinin. This can be removed by drugs, but often, drinking more water to change the thickness of the mucous and saliva can help or using a humidifier to make the air in the room more moist. If its from a viral infection – well you just have to wait and treat the symptom with paracaetamol and other over the counter medicines
I agree with what the other scis said here but dry coughs can also be caused by allergies to things like smoke, pollen, mould, dust, pets and certain cleaning agents.
I think the best thing for a dry cough is to take some nice sticky honey based cough syrup cos that can really stick to your throat and soothe it.
