I don’t study the nervous system. I study the immune system, which I love.
The main reasons I chose the immune system was because the number one killer in the world is infections and I wanted to understand how we protect ourselves normally from them. For instance, 1 child dies every 30 seconds of malaria and overall there are 3 million deaths from malaria each year. That is just one of many hundreds of infections people die from. If we can understand how the immune system protects us, then we might be able to design vaccines that boost the immune system to stop the infection in its tracks. I don’t work directly on vaccines against infection at the moment, but I would like to in the future. I am starting to do a little work on vaccines against cancer though, which I find very exciting.
