By giving someone an alternative reality and focusing them on this and making it feel as real as possible, it is possible to convice people to believe in something which they would otherwise not do so. So that people susoend their disbelief like thinking you will win the lottery just as others have done and all it takes is one line of numbers, see the fireworks and the spangly lights. People want to believe in something and giving it to them allows them to remove the ususal checks they would take so become “brain washed”.

Brainwashing is when you change a persons beliefs and behaviour – but I really don’t know how it is done. 🙁

Brainwashing can occur when a person is convinced of something. Usually it is because they are only given a single view point, or are discouraged from thinking for themselves.

It can also be done through torture, such as drugging or depriving people of sleep.
