Back in the day, there were no extracurricular activities in school. (During my senoir school the teachers were on a work to rule meaning they didn’t do all the out of school stuff even including sports). I was lucky that my older brother was into science and I had good teachers and a supportive family. Now there are lots of after school science activities and also non school clubs. in Hampshire we have the Intech hands on science centre and there will always be museums inn your area. If you are into nature and conservation there will be clubs around where you can learn and volunteer for lots of activities.

My own out of school stuff was music so I only really did science in school time. Your teacher will know what is available

Well, I worked one summer before starting univ in a lab when I was in America. There are also some programs here for secondary school students and I can get that info to you if you are interested.

Other than that, I used to sometimes read books on popular science or watch documentaries and watch animals in the graden to figure out what they were doing. Actually, I also used to read my science textbooks under my desk in classes I didn’t like, which was maybe a little nerdy but hey! Gotta live for yourself and what you like.

Sure. I used to do amateur astronomy outside of school. In fact, when I was about 14-15 years old, I started submitting my own observations of the sun to a professional observatory (Volkssternwarte Paderborn). I also used to experiment with mechanics (using a toy called Fischer-Technik). All my work-experience jobs were with astronomy/physics departments at universities. I also used to go along to open days at labs and things.

No when I was at school there wasn’t any opportunities to do extracurricular activities that weren’t sports. And i’m from a really small town where there aren’t any universities nearby or chemical companies you can go to for work experience.

Not really — however, I did a gap year before I started university and worked for a large educational IT company called RM doing software development, which probably put me on the path to what I am doing now.

I am amazed at how many extra-curricula activities and clubs there are for the STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics) subjects now — I’m jealous!
