For quite a long time, ever since I watched black and white serials on a Saturday morning – Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, the Rocketeer and a film about a robbery of radio active material from a secret lab when I was young. One of the characters wore a lab coat and I think it was from then that I thought it might be interesting. Or something along those lines

The first time I was really exposed to hands-on science was when I went to high school. Before that, I wanted to be a nurse. I liked science straight away. It seemed easier and more fun than other subjects and we were learning new things all the time. It was just so different than the other subjects like english and maths. And I really liked doing experiments, that was my favourite part!

I have always been interested in science. One of my earliest memories ever was of a sticker book of ‘stars and planets’. It had other topics in it as well, from the Northern Lights to galaxies. It definitely got me started. Then, when I was about 6, I saw a picture of a radio telescope control room. It was filled with equipment, screens, buttons, dials and lots and lots of wires. Instantly that became _the_ place where I wanted to work when I grew up. Since then, I’ve worked at lots of telescopes (not just radio ones), but I did spend about two months working in that _exact_ same control room that I had seen in the newspaper 20 years earlier. Yes. I’ve always been interested in science. And probably always will be too.

Ya, I think so, but maybe I was a bit in denial for a long time. It wasn’t terribly cool to admit that you liked ANY subject let alone science.

Definitely, all the way through secondary school!

It probably wasn’t very cool to like science, but I was good at sport too which may have helped.

Question for you: are you interested in science? Which parts do you find interesting?
