There are several natural causes of the moon going red. For example, during a lunar eclipse the moon will be partially shadowed. Depending on the exact position of the shadow, and the amount of dust and other particles in the earth’s atmosphere, this can cause the eclipsed moon to look an orange or coppery colour. In extreme cases it looks quite red. I have seen several copper-coloured moons, but there was one occasion in the late 80’s where it was a really dark red. I remember seeing it through the trees and being VERY impressed.

Also, the moon can appear red because of dust or pollution in the atmosphere, even if there is no eclipse. It may not just be red either. Volcanic eruptions, for instance, can cause the moon to appear blue.

Of course, if the earth and the moon fall into the sun (which would happen at the end of the sun’s life, because the sun expands to beyond the orbit of the earth), then both the moon and earth would get very hot very quickly. I guess then that it would glow red as it started to burn up.

Also, some people call the moon a “Red Moon” in summer. It is not because the moon actually looks red, but this is the time of the year when it is most likely to do so due to dust in the air. This is just a name, really, in the same way that the “Harvest Moon” is at a particular time of year (whether you are harvesting anything or not!).

The “day of judgement” is a concept in some religions. Some, but not all, religions believe there is a day when their gods will judge humans. Because different religions believe different things, it will depend on which religion you mean, and whether they think that there will be a red moon on their particular judgement day or not.

Not sure about the day of judgement, but Derek has given a very good answer regarding lunar eclipses and atmospheric conditions!
